Travel Vases (2019—)

Media: ceramics | Dimensions: variable 1 to 2 cu.in.

I often work at very small scale, of 1-2 inches. As small objects, they are portable and meant to be handled, harkening back to the water jugs that these forms evolved from. I call them travel vases, as in that they are meant to travel with you.

They fit easily in the hand and brought up to the eye. At this scale, what might otherwise register as surface, texture, or ornamentation becomes more difficult to distinguish from the form itself. The small aperture of the opening almost precludes the possibility of interiority, which one is left to discover by foraging for a wildflower of appropriately narrow stem.
